Microsoft security suggested I post my problem here, that it is not a
security issue. Upon booting, my clock changed to 1905. I didn't realize it
until I clicked on a folder and got the following error message:
"Your system clock appears to have been set back, possibly in an attampt to
defeat the security system on this program. Please correct your system clock
before trying to runthis program again. If the clock is correct, please
contact the author of the program for instructions on correcting this error
(report code 0,54943,2441."

I corrected the clock, shut down my computer and started it again. My clock
has stayed at the correct time since then, I am the only person using this
computer. The ONLY things that get this message is all my folders, the My
Compter icon, and Internet Explorer, no programs are involved even though the
message says so. I am using windows 2000 and ran Norton Anti Virus, Micro
Trend on the Internet, Ad aware, bug doctor and reg doctor besides a few
others. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this annoying message?

Hmm.. If you are sure that there is no virus or spyware which might have
caused this system time change I can suggest you to check the BIOS settings
or upgrade the BIOS. You can download the latest BIOS from the vendor
website (if you are using a dell machine the dell website). Be cautious
while upgrading the bios..

I checked my bios and the settings were correct. Since I have a "clone" that
was made for me, I am not sure where to go to upgrade the bios. I do know it
is being affected by explorer. When I highlight the error message and go to
the running processes, explorer is highlighted. How do I correct explorer
without reinstalling windows?

I have not heard much of said error myself but a Google search seems to
indicate that other have experienced it if they had time limited trial
version software on their computer and the time had been changed back either
deliberately or otherwise in an attempt to defeat the trial period. If you
have any time limited trial software on your computer you might want to
uninstall it. Also try booting into Safe Mode to see if the problem persists
and if it does not then almost surely a startup program/service is causing
the problem. Unfortunately I did not read of any definitive fix, only
suggestions to remove any time limited trial or other time limited software
such as Anti Virus or other software that may be time limited with updates
such as Norton that usually is good for a year. --- Steve

In Steven L Umbach <[email protected]> had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

In fact - here's a handy dandy bit of info and a link to a nice free
application (with a tip jar that I've found I've donated to a couple of
times actually because I get that much use out of it) that will make
debugging startup issues like this easier:

I had downloaded msconfig a while ago to keep my start up clean. I even tried
deleting Norton from the startup, which is installed and registered
correctly. I might have downloaded trial programs and let them expire, I am
going to go through everything I have and start deleting anything that
started out as a trial to see if that does it. Thanks for your help, all of
you. I will keep you posted.

I rebooted my computer in safe mode and still had the same error message when
I clicked on folders or IE. I deleted every program that started with a
trial, even though I never adjusted any of the dates. I also used the
msconfig to boot up using only the essensial programs and still get the
error. Anyone else have any ideas?
