Hallo,

I tried to install a freeware (exe-file) on vista rc1. A message came, that
the program can not be installed. A second window opened and offered the
option to install the program as an administrator. I clicked the button and
the installation worked fine. What ist wrong with the freeware? What makes
the error message to appear?

I am looking forward for your help.

Thanks, Jan

user account control UAC
It has nothing to do with the program being freeware UAC halts most
installations and asks for elevated privelages

Thank You, Will.

The only thing, that confuses me, is that an error message with a red cross
appears. Why do they write "Error" before offering the installation as an
administrator?

Regards, Jan

I've seen that too while installing certain programs thats mainly because
UAC blocks the program from installing
and in some cases that will give you an error on screen
But most will install just fine if you install them "as administrater" or if
needed in "compatibility mode"

Most installers need administrator rights, and should be written so that
they ask for them. This one apparently does not do this.

OK, Thanks again, Jan

Without specifying what freeware, people would only be guessing...
