The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject '',

Are you sure the email address (e-mail address removed) is correct?
It is more likely that the domain portion of that address should be earthlink.net.
If you are sure the address is correct, are you sending from home, while
connected to Freeola?

That is the problem...

To quote from... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290842

(Read the article for a full explanation.)

CAUSE
This behavior may occur if you have one of the following configurations:
• You are logged on to a Local Area Network (LAN) that has an Internet
gateway
and you try to send messages through an ISP's SMTP gateway.
• You are logged on to an ISP and you try to send messages through another
ISP's SMTP gateway.
• You are using a cable modem or ADSL to get to another ISP and you try to
send messages.

This behavior affects all messaging clients, regardless of the manufacturer.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, contact your ISP for help. The e-mail client does
not cause this behavior.
From a messaging client standpoint, there are no solutions for customers
whose ISPs block all SMTP Relay traffic.

Most of the new SMTP e-mail gateway software permits relaying for specific
IP addresses. This is how cable modem and ADSL users can continue to use
their same ISP. The cable modem or ADSL provider must provide the customer a
static IP address, in turn, the customer's e-mail ISP allows relaying for
that specific IP address. Banks of IP addresses can also be permitted, which
may provide a work around for some corporate customers who access ISPs
through their corporate LAN.

If the error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this
article is random, it is possible that your SMTP server is checking whether
the domain or the recipient name actually exists before sending the message.
If the recipient's e-mail server is temporarily down or unavailable for
another reason, such as high network volume, your SMTP server cannot verify
the address and may reject the relay. In this case, action is not required.
The message is sent when the receiving server is available again.

Simply put you are asking a server to process email
that the servers owner hasn't been paid for.

It is akin to...

you sending me a letter meant for someone else
and expecting it delivered without consulting
or compensating me.

You might be lucky I'm feeling generous occasionally
but in general it won't work..

If you get any other email problems be sure to include the full
message and codes when you first report it here.

On first glance the the messages look the same as all the other
posted here so it is tempting to leave them out, but the same
message format can contain a myriad of subtly different codes
for a whole host of distinctly different problems and often
point directly to a solution.

Error Number: 0x800CCC79 in OE is caused by the Anti Virus email scanning. Disabling the scanning corrects this issue in OE. Just thought it might be the same in WM

AV software often screws WM but in this case it is definitely a
mismatch
between the email address being used and the server it is being sent
through.
thus... "Relay access denied'

No, the "Relay access denied" error almost always means the OP is
trying to use the SMTP server while connected to a different ISP.

Hi Kate,

I had the same problem. Incoming worked OK but Outgoing showed the same
error message as you

I did this and solved it.

1/ Click on Tools, then Accounts.
2/ Select the email address you are having problems with.
3/ Click on Properties
4/ Click on Servers
5/ In Outgoing Mail put a tick in the box - 'My server requires
authentication.'
6/ Click Settings and make sure it says you use 'same settings as my
incoming mail server.'

It worked for me. Good luck.

Similar perhaps but not the same.

Kate was using a mismatched email address and server.
Please explain how you fix could have solved that?
