Error message too brief to be read

I'm trying to help someone. The problem is that on reboot (not initial boot)
an error message appears too briefly to be read. It says something about
"failed to initialise". The system then works OK but he would like to see
this message. It has been suggested that he should use the Pause key but he
hasn't been able to hit it at the right time. He thinks that, somewhere, he
has seen a method of allowing error messages to be displayed for a specified
period but can't remember it. Any ideas, please? XP Home/SP2.

Check the system or application log of event viewer.

Start|Run|eventvwr.msc
