since installing XP 2002 home edition (with service pack 1)
I cant get my printer (HP 3100C) to print. I have tried
all solutions suggested by troubleshooter,
purchased/installed XP version of HP 3100 driver and tried
replacement cable but still get the above error message -
has anyone any ideas - thanks

Is your printer on your LPT1 parallel port? If so, you may need to
enable the IRQ for the printer. I had similar problems with two older
laser printers and a Calcomp Techjet plotter when I first started using
XP, and no one on this newsgroup seemed to have any answers - I had to
figure it out on my own.

I'm just another user here, who happened to see your post, so I thought
I'd offer what I know about what happened to me.

I hope I've been of some help. If it doesn't work, and you still need
help, you really ought to provide a little more information for the
newsgroup.

Thanks Norm - yes the printer is attached to the LPT1 port
and XP system diagnostics tell me the port is
enabled/working etc. Sorry to be a luddite but how do I
enable the IRQ for the printer.

Hi Lew.
Sorry to not get back to your post right away - I just sat down to check
my mail before turning in for the night.

You can enable the interrupt by using the device manager. You get to it
by opening the control panel. If you are in category view, click on
performance and maintenance, then system. (If you prefer the classic
view, then just open System) When the system properties window opens,
click the hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button.

You'll then see a display of your computer and the hardware, ports, etc.
Expand Ports (COM & LPT), then click on ECP Printer Port (LPT1). Click
the Port Settings tab. You can then allow the port to use an interrupt
(IRQ) by checking the item to allow the port to 'use any interrupt
assigned' to it.

Good Luck! Hope it gets you up and working!

Thanks Norm - still no joy. In the LPT1 Properties window
on the Port Settings tab I have clicked on the use any
interupt assigned button and on the Resources tab I have
ticked the use automatic settings box. I then rebooted and
found two new items in the Resource settings window - IRQ
07 (hallelujah) and DMA 03. After rebooting the two items
that were originally in the resource settings window also
remained ie. I/O range 0378-037F and I/O Range 0778-077B.
I am not sure whether having two I/O ranges or the DMA
item is causing the problem - if so which one should I
delete. Any ideas.
