Cathy

I have an Access database that I have created for use
between 6 people. I have a shared network drive that I
put the database on and the first person I had try it
keeps getting an error message that says "Unrecognized
database format". My initial thought was he's not running
Access 2000 so we had the help desk load Access 2000 on
his computer but we are still getting this message. Any
clues on what I'm doing or not doing.

Thanks

Cathy,

Does the machine that is hosting the shared drive have a copy of Access2000
installed? if so, can I suggest that you try opening that. Or you could try
copying the Access MDB file from the shared drive to a local disk on your
users PC and see if you can open it there.

I'm thinking, either some problem with security/access rights, or possibly a
corrupt MDB file on your share. But you need to do some more tests to try
and find out what is going wrong.

Hope that's of some use.

Cheers,

Chris.

To add to Chris' answer, on the PC that you had the Help Desk load Access 2000 onto, did
they replace Access 97 or does this machine now have both Access 97 and 2000 installed?
If it is the latter, keep in mind that the .mdb file extension will be associated with the
last version of Access that was opened, when the .mdb file is double-clicked in Windows
Explorer. You can create a shortcut which will allow you to specify which version of
Access that you want a particular .mdb file opened with, for PC's that have multiple
versions of Access installed. I have a Word document that outlines the steps. Let me
know, by private e-mail, if you'd like a copy of it.

Also, is there any chance that you used either Access 2002 or 2003, and the file was not
saved in the Access 2000 format? If you have 2002 or 2003, the file format should be
indicated in the blue title bar at the top of your screen when you open the file. I'm
pretty sure that security/access rights would not cause this error message.

On the problem PC, try opening Access 2000 by itself. Then use the File > Open menu (or
the Task Pane) to browse to this .mdb file and try opening it.
