How the heck do I solve this problem? I get this error message when I try to
do a specific search and it prevents me from doing anything :

Bad Request

mmm. If other searches that you do are working fine then there may be a
problem with how you are constructing your search string. Is it too big for
example, can you use less words? Also check the advance search options for
your search provider for info on how to construct a complicated search
query.
Try being more specific if this is the case. The error message indicates
that the problem is occurring at the server side because you are sending too
much text to the server for the search engine to search 4 . This has nothing
to do with IE.

You should contact your search provider with your error message

It's a genealogy website where I regularly search for people, places etc.
I've not had the error problem in the past. I had this problem and got this
error message for the first time yesterday afternoon. I am able to conduct
the search, get the search results, but then when I try to download the
results in the appropriate format, I get the error message.

Any more ideas?
Mike.

I presume that you do your search, get a results page back in your browser
and then you select the Add to Favorites menu option to save off the search
results so that you can wade through them at your leaisure?
If you choose the 'Make available offline' option in the Add Favorite dialog
how many 'links deep' are you saving? If it is more than 1 page then this
could be the problem as IE will use the links to the other search page
results (at the bottom of your first results page) to retrieve and save
those pages too. The search engine is probably paginating (breaking up the
results to page size chunks) and spitting them back a page at a time

To save search results I usually add the search query to my favorites or
links folder instead of the copies of the pages that IE would make available
off-line. It means of coarse that the query is re-run when I select the link
and that I have to be online to run the query and get the results. To save a
search query to my favorites I just drag and drop the URL from the Address
bar to the Favorites button on the Buttons Toolbar or right click on the
results page and select the Add to Favorites from the menu options.
Another stategy I use is to firstly create a folder in Favorites, say My
Family Search Results.... Do the search and starting from the first page of
the results select those links in the search results that I want to keep for
further reference, then page through the results sets, adding (not saving)
links from the results pages (not actual copies of the results pages) to my
favorites sub folder.
I think maybe my guess that saving more that one link deep of a search
results is the cause of your problem is correct. If you need to save your
search results, because you need to work off-line or want to retain the
annotations with the links, perhaps use the File/Save As menu command for
each Page of results you want to retain off-line.

I could be totally wrong though. Looking back through the thread I see that
you have made no mention of how you are downloading the results page....
Another way to save the results is to choose Edit/Select All from the IE
menus, then copy and paste to notepad, but this won't save the links, only
the text content..
Hope this helps.

Perhaps Cookie: is the request header in question?

Try deleting your Cookie for that site.

Thanks for the suggestion; tried that but still no luck.

It's an unusual search site. You can select up to 50 of the results from the
list and then click on a link "prepare records for download". Then I get the
"Bad request " message. Or sometimes I get to the next step which is a
dialogue box saying "your documents are being downloaded, click yes/no if the
download is successful". But then I immediately get an "information bar"
saying the download is blocked, but I can click an option to allow the
download. As soon as I select to continue with the download, I get the "Bad
request" message. The result is that I cannot download the 50 records
selected. I've tried selecting just one and trying to download that, but
with no luck.

Help!!

Mike.
