I recently replace my system's hard drive. Every week or
so, the system shuts down and an error message stating
that the system was "checking the disk for consistency"
comes up. It runs through a disk check when it restarts
and everything seems to be fine. Whats going on? Do I
need to be concerned that this drive is about to do a
serious crash?

chances are your disk has an error on it and it is damaged. It happened to me when the power went off and my computer was running at the time
the best thing to do is back up all the data that is on the hard drive (Family photos,Videos etc) and reinstall windows
The reason i say this is when you reinstall xp it will partition your drive and either repair the bad blocks or stop them from being used
All the best.
