I leave my pc and click Standby. When I come back and move the mouse, the computer starts to reboot by its self.
The following error message is on screen:

Computer restarted after an unexpected shutdown. Microsoft detected a possible device failure.
The driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation.
Please check with the device manufacture for a driver update.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
The display driver for 16MB ATI Rage 128 Ultra seem to be responsible for the system instability.

I send the error report to Microsoft.
I checked Dell Solution Center and see the said display driver is under 'Vedeo', which is listed under Hardware Information on my computer.
The driver code is ati2mtaa.sys
The manufacturer's name is not displayed.

I went to Windows Update and it did not find or offer any driver update for me after the scan.

My wishful thinking is it's a one-time event.
Can anyone kindly tell me what to do next?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi
Had the same problem when I first installed xp pro. I was using the asus v-7700 video card and got the exact same message you did. Lucky for me I happen to have a Radeon card (64m vivo) which I installed and the system booted fine. I then installed the nvidia drivers for the Asus v-7700 and replace the radeon with the asus 7700 and all seems to be working well (so far). I got the impression that the drivers that microsoft supplied with xp pro were not compatible with the v 7700. (since I had no video output on the motherboard I could only use another video card) Perhaps you have a video output on your motherboard and won't need to use another card!! Can't say I'm an expert with any of this...best of luck (isn't trouble shooting a hoot!!!)

Regards

Karlowski

Hi Karlowski. Thanks for your effort in replying
My vedeo card came with Dell when I pruchased it. Mine is Windows XP home Edition
I don't have other vedeo card. Frankly I know very little about it technically
The computer seems ok for the moment, despite that Error message show up once

Best wishes

Spend a little more time on Dell's website. Go into their service area,
enter your machine code or serial #. Then look for software/driver updates.
It appears they may have a newer driver than the one shipped with XP for
your card.

Hey Dell, I went on Dell's Downloads, found the following on the page
Title: ATI Rage 128 Ultra 16 MB, Driver, Windows XPMulti Lanuage, Multi System, v 6.60 WXP, A0
Catergory: Video Driver
File Name: AT1XPA05.EX
File: Size 3 M
Release date 12/7/0
Fixes and Enhancements: Addresses an OpenGL issue that could occur after resuming from system standby or hibernatio

FYI This file is compatible with my Dell and Windows XP

However, when I take a closer look on the description of file AT1XPA05.EXE, it says it is a Windows XP video driver for ATI Rage 128 Ultra 16 MB graphic adapters. [ Sorry, I am confused, do I actually need an update of the display driver for ATI Rage 128 Ultra 16 MB, or a Windows XP video driver for ATI Rage....., or an update of ATI Rage........... itself?

I wonder if this is the update I am looking for and need to download and install
The version of my ATI Rage 128 Ultra 16 MB is v 5.05
If so, can I jsut go ahead and do it, and would it then update my older v. 5.0

Or, if it is not an update and it is the driver itself, do I have to remove/unstall the Display Adapter on the computer first, before down and intallation

If you can find time, would appreciate you can again read the Error message in my first post, and help me to determine if the download of file AT1XPA05.EXE is right for me
