Hi

Have just bought new laptop and i keep getting the following error message

'Application failed to initialize 0x800106ba. A problem caused this programs
service to stop. To start this service restart your computer or search help
and suport for how to start a service normally'

I have tried selecting defender but get the same message, and when i restart
this message automatically appears

Any ideas???

Thanks

Since this is a new machine, I'm guessing that it is running Windows Vista?

Since Defender is part of the OS, I would suggest that the machine has not
been properly configured, and if it is easy for you to take it back to a
knowledgable vendor, I’d have them fix it.

However, this is probably easy to fix.

Start, all programs, accessories.

Right-click command prompt and choose "run as administrator"

If this is Vista Home, this choice may not be available - let me know.

In the resulting command prompt window, type

sfc /scannow

and hit enter.

This should correct the problem.

Hi

Yes running VISTA Home Premium and no i don't get the run as administrator
option

I did buy this from a very good retailer, so should i ring them on Monday to
sort out?

Thanks for your help

Let's give it one more try.

Restart the machine in safe mode.

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/323ef48f-7b93-4079-a48a-5c58eec904a11033.mspx

When you get to the login prompt, try logging in with username "administrator" and no password.

Then try the sfc /scannow procedure--which you can find described in this article--just past 1/4 way down down--watch for something in the far right margin.

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/95b4c03a-ac42-49a4-a90d-8f3736a995271033.mspx

I'm afraid I'm not quite clear on the procedure for reaching a true elevated administrator prompt in Vista home. The procedure is the same regardless of the version of Vista, but the process of getting to the right state to use it differs.

I guess my post is too late given the post dates I show here. Do you think
the following link might apply to Vista? It would be nice if MS could make a
comment as to which OS it apllies to either before or following the article
like; applies to both Vista and XP users etc OR not, as the case may be. Got
it from Engel some time ago.

Hello,

I am running into the same issue but different symptoms. I've recently
reinstalled my Windows Vista Home Premium. Initially, everything worked fine.
In the last day or two, this error began to show up. Unfortunately, Windows
Defender is not showing up in the add/install programs list. Therefore, all
attempts to remove and re-install are unsuccessful. I tried all of the
suggestions by Bill and Stu but none worked for this problem.

Additional note: This problem didn't crop up until after Windows Update
installed the same update twice i.e. "Definition Update for Windows Defender
- KB915597 (Definition 1.51.1279.0)".

Any ideas?

Hello Mark,

Go ahead and download\update from here
<http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal>

go to the address specified, and in the right column, download the 32-bit
definitions.

Putting in the definitions from the security portal should fix this.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

Good luck

Thanks Engel,

That worked. The first time I tried the suggestion, I still had the error up
and ran it directly from the site (that didn't work). But then, I decided to
save it, close all windows/programs open, and run as admin. That did work.

I appreciate the help very much,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks for posting back. That's always a nice gesture when we get back a
post indicating if the suggestions were helpful or not.

I spoke to a technician from microsoft. After about 45 minutes we resolved
the issue.

1. Download Microsoft Easy Assist from MS Downloads. Run it.
2. Open the program and select Windows defender
3. You will see options for manual and automatic run. Choose automatic.

This worked, as somehow the program had switched from auto to manual and
became disconfigured. Good luck

Gerald,

From everything I see online about Microsoft Easy Assist, it requires a name
and a session ID (from a support person). Therefore, this tip wasn't very
helpful.

Engel,

Update on this:

The error will reappear after awhile. I haven't fully diagnosed the
conditions required to cause the error to happen. I've noticed the error
again when switching to my second user account and after restarts of the
system. If I re-download the windows defender it will work fine again. Still,
it's kind of quirky.

Any ideas?

Been searching the net for a solution to this issue and came across your
thread boys... Seems this problem has been around for at least three years
and I've yet to come a cross an actual FIX.

I have a Dell XPS M2010 running Vista Home Premium. When I first got this
lap PC I had to fix the same darned issue. Prob is I had to rebuild it
recently and I managed to forget just HOW I fixed issue...

Engel - MS Easy Assist is coming up as part of MS Live Meeting, so I'm not
exactly sure how that app is related to WD. Can you illuminate?

I've tried scannow and all my system files are fine and, honestly, if it
were a corrupt system file, I'd think that that would show up as a solution
almost immediately in your searches.

I know I can't remove WD, I know I can't reinstall WD, and I know I just
want the darn thing to work. Does anyone know what exactly causes the
problem? Is it just a matter of removing and/or replacing the right Update?
Perhaps it's another spy-ware app interfering?

Well... Perhaps I should have just read a bit further... Seems mommagirl got
it right with her post in 'Windows Defender.'

She suggested opening Control Panel, going to Admin Tools, opening Services
and scrolling down to Windows Defender. I then clicked 'Start' in the upper
right hand window. I also switched my Startup Type to Automatic.

Looks like the buger is working fine now...

Hope this helps,
-Dreux

Right--this is what happened in Gerald's case. His description of the
process missed a few details, I'm afraid. The app he mentions allows a
Microsoft tech to assist the user in making this change--it isn't of any use
without that tech support.

So--in your case, this error is happening on Windows XP, correct?

Bill,

Nope, this is a Vista Home Premium installation. The PC was originally
installed that way and only recently needed to be reinstalled (Dell changed
out the hard drive and motherboard due to overheating).

Mark

Dreux,

Thanks for the detailed instructions. After I switched to the classic
control panel menu and followed the remaining steps, I was able to switch
Defender from Manuel to Automatic. Now, we'll see if the problem continues to
occur - hopefully not.

Mark

Your reference to re-downloading Windows Defender leaves me confused.

In Vista, Windows Defender is part of the OS, and cannot be removed. So I'm
lost about what is happening if you re-download Windows Defender.

Bill,

If you refer to the thread between myself and Engel, that should explain how
I go t Windows Defender re-downloaded.
