I have searched high and low for an answer to this that actually works. I
found nothing on MS' site(s). What I found on other sites was more or less
the same steps to eliminating the error, none of which worked for me :(

In my update log, I find this mess:

What specific update were you trying to install, or does this happen
with all updates?

Good evening, and thank you for replying :)

I was just trying to manually do a Windows Update. I prefer not to have
automatic update turned on.

I have done all sorts of things as per posts I found here this morning and
posts on sites elsewhere...to no avail:

Tinkered with all the security settings in Internet Options; deleted all
instances of wuweb.dll; did some stuff form the command prompt, regserv
(insert command here) things; cleared caches and temp files, etc.

All I really wanted to do was update my ATI driver (this is in a Dell
Inspiron 9300 laptop with XP Pro on it) but I was unable to even do that
manually--I couldn't track down where the driver was on MS' site.

But, now I am perplexed as to why, all of a sudden, I can't do a Windows
Update....and yea, I'm running SP2 :)

Lots of people have encountered problems with the hardware updates
from the Microsoft web site.

If you want to update the drivers for your ATI card then you should
get them from the Dell web site or direct from the ATI web site.

But you should be using the Windows Update site and getting all repeat
all of the critical updates, and you should at least occasionally
check the optional updates to see if anything there is applicable to
your system.

Are you having problems with the critical updates listed at Windows
Update? That would be an urgent concern.

And it would also be an urgent concern if you were not keeping your
computer fully updated with these critical updates as they are
released. The wording of your message seems to imply that you may not
be getting these updates.

What very often happens is that when a new critical update is released
that patches a vulnerability in Windows then among the very first
people to download this update are the malware writers. These people
then "reverse engineer" the update to identify exactly where the
vulnerability is that is being patched, and then they develop an
exploit to attack this vulnerability. These exploits have been known
to be released and to start attacking computers within a week of the
critical update being released.

And once the exploit is released any computers that have not been
updated are vulnerable and may be infected by the exploit. Hundreds
of thousands (at least) of computers have been infected because of
this, including a number of large corporations and government agencies
who had what they thought were first class security measures in place.

Good luck

Good evening :)

This machine was bought in July, and I have updated it manually with Windows
Update at least once since then. The place where I am stalling isn't the
updates themselves (I should have been clearer on that point).

It is when I first get to the Windows Update site where it says there is a
new version of the software (for the Update process) to be installed. It
downloads the files and copies them all the way to 100 percent. Then it
aborts and takes me to the screen that suggests I come here or ck the
Knowledge Base.

That's where the initial error number is. If you look at the snippet of my
Windows Update log in my initial post, you'll see some other error numbers in
the actual log with what failed to happen.

Thanks!

Good evening :)
Yes, I already have an email into them through that site and received a
reply from them that they were forwarding it to another department LOL

No further contact from them yet.

This is sooo frustrating. I've never had a problem on any of my machines
that I couldn't figure out by reading up on it. I guess I should consider
myself lucky :p

If Microsoft has acknowledged your report and has passed it on for
further investigation then this means:

a: There is no known cure for this problem at present.
b: The problem is considered to be important enough to be worthy of
further investigation.
c: You should (eventually) receive a response regarding a solution,
but it may take some time.

Good luck
