When trying to save an Access table/Query to an Excel file format, I get the
following error:

"There are too many rows to output based on the limitations specified by the
output format or by MS Access."

I can save it as a text file, then import it into Excel & everything works
fine. There are 17,626 lines in this file. Can anyone tell me how to get rid
of this error message. Are there options someplace that I can configure?

Thanks
Sara

You probably specified an earlier Excel format for the output file.

Earlier Excel version can only take approx. 16K rows and therefore Access
will complain if you have more than 16K rows going into the earlier Excel
file format which cannot accept more than 16K rows.

Check and make sure you specify a later Excel format (Excel2K and later
certainly can take 64K rows, not sure about Excel97)

Sorry, I should have specified. I'm using Access 2002 & Excel 2002;
When I try to export, I am selecing: "Microsoft Excel 97-2002
(*.xls)". I've tried a number of times, with no success. I also
select the "Save Formatted" option. I just tried again without
selecting that "Save Formatted" option and it worked....no error that
time.
Any more insight that anyone can provide will be appreciated.
Thank you.

I don't know what's going on, except for drawing the obvious conclusion
that there's some limitation involved in the formatting. Does it work
for smaller tables? Equally large tables with no formatting?

Sara,

I was also getting the error:

"There are too many rows to output based on the limitations specified by the
output format or by MS Access."

I found out that when I checked the "Save Formatted" option, Access added an
extra row between each record in the output file that just a row of hyphens.
So in my case I was trying to save 45,000 records to Excel XP and I was
getting the error because Access was trying to writ 90,000 rows. 45,000 of
those rows were just hyphens. When I tried the export again and did not
choose the Save Formatted option, Access wrote the records to Excel.

I don't know why you couldn't save 17,000 records, unless you accidently
chose one of the earlier versions of Excel as the output format.

HTH,

Brian
