I have just tried to set up Windows Mail since Windows Vista doesn't use
Outlook Express. I have tried to send an email but it says:

The host 'smtpayth.earthlink.net' could not be found. Please verify that you
have entered the server name correctly.
Subject 'Re: Next Food Network Star', Account: 'pop.earthlink.net', Server:
'smtpayth.earthlink.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket
Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

Now what?!?!?

Try this, it worked for others using a BT based system.

Thanks to JP & YR the following solved it for me:

go to email TOOLS
click on ACCOUNTS
on every one of your accounts do the following:

Click on one account
click on PROPERTIES on the right hand side

In the new window click on the ADVANCED Tab
In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP): window change the figure 25 to 587
Click on OK

When all accounts have been done., you should have recovered from this silly
problem.

Please refrain from posting this as generic/universal advice.
Settings that work for a BT customer may not work for an
EarthLink customer (which is what the OP is).
The issue in this case was clearly a simple typo in the server name.

Shut up.
You haven't a clue and, even worse,
you are misleading people.

OP... another post identified your problem as a typo.
"'smtpauth.earthlink.net" is the correct server id.

Sorry - just trying to be helpful. Silly me for assuming that the spelling
had been checked as suggested in the error message.

I'll shut up then shall I?

Trying to be helpfull is better than being rude to people IMHO!

Yes.

Too many cooks spoils the broth.

Just out of interest I checked the Earthlink.net website.

Julian and Gary, you'll never believe it!

In Earthlink properties/account/advanced they tell their customers to set
the Outgoing mail (SMPTE): to 587

So there - I was correct all along.

Now say "Sorry Dennis".

No.

You're missing the point. Your advice is not generally correct.
Yes, some ISPs support port 587, but many do not.
You can't just willy-nilly advise people to change their port numbers.

Ok Gary, I understand what you say. But my post was not general; if you
re-read it you will see that I did say that the fix was for a BT system. It's
better than telling everyone to remove all their anti-virus software whether
or not it is causing the problem, especially when you consider how much work
is involved in removing some of this AV software.
