My computer has been afflicted with the "Excel.exe has
caused errors and will now close" cold, which I cannot
seem to remedy. It behaves only on my user profile (admin
can use excel without any problems), and after trying
several fixes found on this site, I am sad to say it still
crashes. Here is what I've looked into:

-Rebooting windows in Safe mode, to eliminate any possible
conflicts.
-Locating and renaming Excel.pip.
-Reinstalling Office 2000.
-Locating and deleting all *.xlb files (there were none)
-Moved Personal.xls
-the /automation switch
-Moved everything out of the XLStart folder
-Eliminated the possibility of an 'alternate startup file
lcoation'

The only fix, thus far, is to run excel with the /safe
tag. This works without any errors. To this end, I have
only a couple of questions:

-What, exactly does Safe mode disable?
-Are there any other fixes I have missed?

Please let me know.

Mable,

*.xlb file. If you have used Excel, you have a *.xlb file. You need to
search again to find it and delete it. Try searching from your C drive on
down.

Also, try the following:

Start | Run. You do need to use the quotes and the path might need to be
modified to suit your PC.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /unregserver

then do the same thing, but type

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /regserver

Best regards,
Kevin

I attempted to search for the *.xlb file, but I still came
up with nothing. Then it occurred to me: *.xlb might be
hidden. I searched again, found the file (a whopping 236K,
compared to the admin's 9K) and erased it, and my problems
were gone. Thanks.
