I'm trying to delete a folder, but when I do, it tells me that it cannot find
a folder that existed within than folder that I delete a long time ago.

so for example: I'm trying to delete D:\Incoming\new folder but it's telling
me it cannot because D:\Incoming\new folder\sort cannot be found.
Specifically the error message refers to the folder within the folder and
says "Cannot Find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path
and file name."

Specifically the error message refers to the folder within the folder and
says "Cannot Find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path
and file name."

When this happens, I move down a level, delete, then move up. In other
words, go to D:\Incoming\new folder\ and delete its contents. Then move up
the directory tree and delete \new folder\.

While you are currently getting a message about a non-existent folder, I've
found that the error messages on failed delete operations are not very
accurate in general. Reason for what's happening could be a mix of factors
such as (but not limited to) varied permissions on contents -or- system
restore getting in the way by creating duplicates of monitored files and
folders before processing the delete request.

Thanks Sharon, but moving up the folder chain didn't work. Any other
sugestions?

Move down a level first. Delete objects at that level. If still getting
"access denied" and if possible, move down another level. Once you get a
successful delete, then start moving back up (one level at a time) to the
folder that you were wanting to delete to begin with.

Other suggestions:

- Run Disk Cleanup and chkdsk if you haven't done that in a while.

-There are some file types that are particularly troublesome for delete
operations. Many causes for this issue are documented in the MS Knowledge
Base. Links for a few of those articles:
