Error Code 39/System Interrupt Controller

Hi. I have a Gateway computer running Windows XP. My CDROM/CDRW went bad, so I bought another one and installed it. However, the same error message keeps popping up that popped up on the first one, error code 39, device corrupted or missing. Also, this code seems to pertain to the System Interrupt Controller as well, but noboby I have spoken to seems to have any idea as to what this is. Can anyone help me? Thanks!
