Dave

i'm running a computer i built myself, 2.4GHz
Celeron/256MB DDR266 (1 slot of two being used) using a
Biostar ( http://www.biostar.com.tw ) motherboard,
Western Digital ( http://www.westerndigital.com )
harddrive, and other working parts scoured from old
computers. my board has onboard LAN, A/V, 1 serial port,
2 USB, 1 printer, etc. i get error code 12 for the MIDI,
COMM port, and AGP port, which when viewed by connection,
are all on the PCI bus. i recently installed nVidia
Asylum GeForce 4 MX-440 card and the problem seemed to
disapear (i thought if i moved the video off the
mainboard it would free up sufficient resources). the
problem stayed fixed for all of 2 days before retrning to
the state i previously reported. as of now i have
onboard video disabled and am using the video card, but
all possible resolutions are not available to me, the
above ports are still reporting error code 12 (i have 1
COMM port and it says i have two malfunctioning).
updating/changing drivers does nothing to alleviate the
problem. please advise me on how i can get these
problems resolved so the computer will recognize my
video, COMM ports, and MIDI software/hardware.

Hello

Disable your com ports and give that a try, do you need them
to be active, give a try as a test and see if AGP and Soundcard
work ok. This gives you a way to narrow down the problem

i would like to use the COMM ports (not everyday, but at
least once in a while) so if that is the source of the
problem then how do i enable them again once disabled and
not get this problem?

to give you a followup on what's going on - i searched
windowsupdate and installed everything that it suggested
for XP Pro, reseating the card seems to work till i power
down (then i have to reseat again). this is obviously
not the way an AGP card is supposed to act so i believe
the board's PCI controller (which contains the AGP port)
so i'm switching boards via the seller (
www.tigerdirect.com ) as per recommendation of 3 friends
i asked separately. as i said, reseating the card causes
normal operation so it's not a driver problem. ;) thanks
for your help thus far and i'll update again when i
replace the board.
