I tried to get auto update to go on and I can't. I did the whole start, run,
services.msc thing over and over and it won't work. I scroll down to
automatic, hit apply, hit start, and then get this message, " Error 1058:
The device cannot be started either becaue it is disabled or because it has
no enabled device associated with it."
NOW what do I do? PLEASE HELP!! I need my computer!!
Operating System: Windows XP

You could try this way:
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then
click Services.
Double-click the service that did not start.
Click the Log On tab.
Verify that the service has not been disabled for the hardware profile that
you are using. If it has, click Enable.
Click the General tab. Verify that the service has not been disabled in the
Startup Type box. If it has, click Automatic to have it start when you start
the computer.

Another way I came across:

Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
In the right pane, double-click Automatic Updates.
Click the Log On tab.
In the You can enable or disable this service for the hardware profiles
listed below box, click the current hardware profile, and then click Enable.
Click Apply, and then click the General tab.
Click Start, and then click OK.

YOU are a moron. You hadda use two hands to pull that one outta yer
ass.

[X-post to WU NG]

You have a Vundo infection, which is usually accompanied by ZLOB and/or
SDBot infections, all of which are protected by a rootkit.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run additional checks for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis
log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,

by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
