I`m at my wits end,I`ve tried all the info given by MS regarding this error
but still it persists.I have been using the computer I built for three months
now and everything has been fine, until last thursday when I inserted a disc
into my DVD-CD -RW combo drive-- World Book 1999 deLuxe and went to my
Computer and the drive had disapeared. So I went to Device Manager to see if
the driver was still installed and there it was "This device could not start
Code 10" and i have tried everything ,even to the extent of buying a new
drive, but to no avail, even with the new drive it will not install the driver
for the device. Is the only thing left to do __format the drive and start
again?????? Please someone help!!!!!!!!!!!!

John,

I don't know whether you have tried this, but the following link may provide
a solution. Follow the instructions on the following Microsoft article to
remove upper and lower filters:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461

Sometimes this solution works, but who knows until you try it. Another
approach is to uninstall the drive in Device Manager (under its Properties)
and reboot to see whether Windows fixes the issue when it reboots. Some
burner programs, such as Nero and/or iTunes/iPod have been known to cause the
problem you're having. Post back on
the results.

Freddy, Thanx for your post and the info I`ve not tried this fix yet as i`m,
a little aprehensive about messing about in the Registry, which if i stuff it
up will mean a reinstall of Vista anyway.I think I will just Format and
reinstall .I know this sounds funny but I don`t see any function or
indication of how to uninstall Vista can you help in tat area?
John

Just take a restore point before you update the registry that way if you
foul it up you can quickly recover to where you were.
Freddy has helped a lot of users solve DVD problems so you should at least
try the one he suggested.
