I have windows 2000 server which has active directory on it. I was having
this error when i tried to add a client to domain. I formatted the server. At
first i was able to add new clients but after a couple of days I had the same
error. Also, after this error, my network printers doesn't work.
Can anybody help me to solve the problem?

Hello resonance,

Sounds like DNS configuration or firewall related. Please post an unedited
ipconfig /all from the DC/DNS server and the problem workstation.

Is there any firewall blocking communication between the machines?

Also post the DNS domain name, the name shown in AD UC and the NetBios domain
name.

Is the server listed with it's A record in the DNS servers forward/reverse
lookup zone and also the Nameserver record?

Hopefully this is the only workstation and you don't run a complete domain
with one DC which you now have reinstalled.

Best regards

Hello Mr. Weber,
Thank you for your post.

Active directory is on problematic server( windows 2000).
Host Name: zeus
Primary DNS Suffix: pal.metu.edu.tr
Node Type: Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No
DNS Suffix Search List: pal.metu.edu.tr
metu.edu.tr
edu.tr

DHCP Enabled: No
IP Address: 144.122.67.17
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 144.122.67.1
DNS Servers: 144.122.67.11
144.122.199.20

There is another server that is used for DNS(windows 2003).
Host Name: antiphellos
Primary DNS Suffix: labkar.org.tr
Node Type: Unknown
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No
DNS Suffix Search List: labkar.org.tr
cc.metu.edu.tr
metu.edu.tr

DHCP Enabled: No
IP Address: 144.122.67.11
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 144.122.67.1
DNS Servers: 144.122.67.11
144.122.199.90

As far as I know there is not a firewall blocking communications between
machines. Because with this configuration, I was able to add a client to
domain last week.

Domain name is pal.metu.edu.tr , NetBios domain name PALM

Under DNS of problematic server, server(zeus) is listed. Also, under Forward
Lookup Zone, server is listed. But Reverse Lookup Zone is empty. Name Server
is zeus.pal.metu.edu.tr

Thank you...

Hello resonance,

As the 2003 server is from a differnt domain, does it have the zone "pal.metu.edu.tr"
a secondary or why is it added on the NIC as secondary DNS? Normally you
should only use the domain DNS servers only on the NIC of the machines belonging
to that domain.

Hello Mr. Weber,
2003 server has the zone "pal.metu.edu.tr" at third line. (1. labkar.org.tr
2.localdomain 3. pal.metu.edu.tr) under Forward Lookup Zone. The system was
set up previously. I don't know why it is like this.

Hello resonance,

If the domains are not connected with a trust there is no need for the zone
in DNS and also not to have the ip address from that domains DNS server on
the machines NIC. So if both domains have NO relationship remove the ip address
from other DNS server on the NIC on both DCs and all domain machines.

Having to different domain on the smae subnet is a not optimal configuration,
you should better use different ip subnets so there can't be a conflict created
as it now exist.

Hello again,
2003 server is not in the domain "pal.metu.edu.tr", 2000 server only gets
dns from it. That is, ip of 2003 server is used as Preferred DNS server by
2000 server.

Hello resonance,

Please describe why you use the other domains DNS server? I cnanot understand
the reason.

2003 server has our websites, I think for this reason it was set up as DNS
server. I wasn't here during setup of the system. Unfortunately, I don't have
much information about that.

Hello resonance,

Your problem belongs to the ip address of that DNS server, remove it from
the NIC, run ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns and restart the
netlogon service on the 2000 server and check again if the problem exist.

I tried to remove ip address from 2000 server but I get "Multiple Default
Gateways warning" error. Also, although I haven't changed something,
yesterday I can add a client to domain. However, after that I can't reach
computers under my network places, files on server from different computers
even if they are on the same domain.

Hello resonance,

This message i have seen when teaming software is used and it was safe to
ignore it as long as the ip address configuration was correct on the NIC
itself.

Keep in mind that using teaming software isn't supported from Microsoft.
http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/jorge/archive/2005/11/15/72.aspx

Network browsing requires that NetBios over TCP/IP is enabled on the NIC
settings, also if you use subnets you have to configure a WINS server.
