Scandisk actually isnt a vald xp utility, its for older
windows os.R.click the hd in my computer, properties, tools
chk the box,fix file system errors,or in cmd, type:
CHKDSK C: /F Or /R for repair. Its hard to chk the drive
when the system running is on the same drive,it cant be
done,like checking a tire at 65mph.

That's what I did & got the message I posted in my
original message. My husband is running xp on his laptop
& he can run the error checking utility on his with
windows running so there must a setting wrong on my
computer but I don't know what.

I don't know about a wrong setting, but I regularly run
the disk checking utility by just clicking yes in the box
to schedule the operation the next time windows starts
and then restart the computer and wait for it to finish.

How long does it normally take? And does it display any
message because I answered yes & now the computer just
sits there. I have a 120g hard drive. Just thought it
weird my husbands works but mine doesn't. He's got sp1
also.
