Error checking does not work

I am using Windows XP Home SP2 with all the updates including the ones for
Aug. 15, 2007.

When I go to "My Computer", Local disk C, Properties, Tools, error checking
I click both boxes to tell the computer to repair errors and run the error
checker when the computer restarts. After the computer restarts I get a
screen telling me that the file system is NT something or other and that
the disk check has been canceled. This problem just started in the last
few days and I think it has been since I D/L the new security updates.
Previously, the disk checker would run and take about 20 minutes to check
the drive. It would then go to the desk top.

The problem is that disk checker no longer runs.

Can you suggest any solutions to the problem?

Thank you
Bob

Try going to run, type:cmd In cmd type:CHKDSK C: Then type:
CHKDSK C: /F REVERT Agree to restart, type:EXIT Restart pc

I would try HD Tune (freeware).
Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy
to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Also do a full surface
scan with HD Tune.

Here are the results of HD Tune. It seems OK to me but the numbers may mean
something to you. I tried the suggestion that Andrew made but I keep
getting an "invalid perameter" in the Cmd. window. In the Cmd. window I can
get the disk checker to start when I restart the PC but the same message
appears that I mentioned in my original post. (Disk check has been
cancelled).
Bob.

I can see nothing obviously wrong in the reports by HD Tune

An explanation of the new /C and /I Switches that are available to use
with Chkdsk.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314835/en-us

See also:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/chkdsk.mspx?mfr=true

Before you run chkdsk it can help to run Disk CleanUp. If you regularly
have more than one person accessing the computer, each having their own
user profile, then Disk CleanUp needs to be run in each User Profile.

type:
CHKDSK C: /F REVERT is not the usual command and this may be why you
are getting a complaint about parameters.

More usual would be chkdsk C: /F OR chkdsk C: /F /R

After you select Start, Run, type cmd and hit ENTER, then type cd\ and
hit ENTER and that takes you to the c:\> prompt for you then to type
chkdsk C: /F OR chkdsk C: /F /R.The first fixes errors -the second
checks the disk for bad sectors. Take care to include the spaces.

Gerry: I went over all the information that you gave me and I seem to be
able to operate the Cmd. window OK. However, when I restart the PC I am
still getting the message that Chkdsk has been cancelled. This happens no
matter what I type into the Cmd. window. When Chkdsk is working properly
and I restart the PC I get a window that tells me that I can hit "any key"
to stop the process. It is allmost like some unknown gremlin has ordered
check disk to be aborted.
Do you have any further suggestions?
One thing that I did notice is that when the PC starts and Windows is
loading I am getting a clicking sound from inside the PC case. This noise
just started about the time I noticed the problem with check disk. I do
not know enough about PC's to tell if the noise if from the HD or the
floppy drive or the CD drive. I don't know if this noise has anything to
do with the problem regarding Check disk not running. My PC is about five
years old so it is not exactly new.
