Error: 'Application for project...not installed...(.vbproj)'

I am trying to use Halvorson's book, MS Visual Basic
.NET Step By Step, and I have loaded the sample
programs, etc, from the included cd. However, when I try to open the
projects, I get the message:

The application for project 'C:\vbnet03sbs\...\xxx.vbproj' is not installed.
Make sure the application for the project type (.vbproj) is

installed.
The files on my hard disk appear to be complete (as compared to the
setup cd). I can't even get into the first lesson because of this.
Can anyone please help me?

(By the way - I am using MS Visual Basic .NET Standard Edition 2003 in
Windows XP Professional).
