Ok...I've read most of these posts about this problem. It seems that most
everyone downloaded and burned their own. I ordered the DVD from Microsoft.
So, I don't think it's a problem with downloading or burning.
I've tried installing on an empty NTFS 40G drive that is the ONLY drive on
my RAID connection and on a 120G slave drive. Neither one was successful.
Should I ask Microsoft for my $6 back?

I'm not sure what you mean by an only drive on a raid connection. Whatever
drive you tried to install on your system needs to have the driver for the
hard disk controller. If it isn't supported in the firmware you need to
supply the driver using the "Load Drivers" button.

I did supply the driver....hpt3xx.sys,etc....it's a HighPoint RAID device. I
have ONE 40G HD hooked up to it. I'd attach another HD but I'm having a hard
time finding a larger basket to mount the HD's into.
The install program recognized the driver (I had the pertinant files on a
USB flash drive), installed without any noticeable problem But, after
3%.....I get the same error. I tried installing to my 120G HD, a slave off my
primary master, with the same results. This is NOT a downloaded .iso burned
to my own DVD. This is a DVD I ordered from Microsoft because I couldn't
access the download at the time and decided to order the DVD.
I have not seen any posts anywhere else of anyone having the same problem
form ORDERED DVD's...just downloaded iso's.
I would really like to try this but....so far it looks like it's more
trouble than it's worth.

I am also having a problem with the Microsoft DVD. When I load from within
XP to a separate disk (samsung sp1614c) it stops at 27% when expanding files
with the error "Setup failed to open the Windows image file". When I attempt
to load while booting the DVD it stops at 8% when expanding files with the
error "An error occurred while laying down images".

On my system the first reboot is called at about the 20% point in expanding
files. It sounds like you may not have the right harddisk controller driver
loaded in your system. You can supply a driver with the Load Drivers button
on the Setup configuration screen.

Still not having any success with the install, I saw in another post where
it was recommended to run HD Tune on the drive, so I downloaded a copy and
sure enough with 10 seconds it came back with a read error failure, so I
guess I'll be buying a new drive tomorrow. (I did run windows checkdisk
w/scan for bad sectors earlier and it passed).

Well, I got my new drive yesterday and attempted to install Vista from the
boot DVD(from MS), but sadly got the same failure while expanding files. I
decided to download the beta this morning again (after the MS DVD failed
last week I d/l and burned two disks, both failed and that's when I
discovered the read error on the HD), but instead of burning a disk I
decided to try Daemon Tools because somewhere in the newsgroup I read there
may be problems with NEC drives and both of my are, so I got a copy of
Daemon Tools and loaded Beta 2 with no problems in about 45 minutes.

Bottom line: the MS DVD failed both from within XP and boot loading on both
dvd drives(actually the 3520 is the only boot drive) and the 2 disks I
burned (1) @ 8X and (1) @ 4X (the lowest nec would go) also failed both
ways.

I still think it is not the drives but the drivers. You are getting this
right at the point where Setup has to reboot the first time and that is when
the driver first becomes an issue.

I know it does not seem right but I loaded SIS 180 & 181 Raid Controller
drivers from the same floppy for both attempted installs to same
partition/drive. Maybe some weird interaction between DVD drive and drivers.
I think I might try installing Vista without loading the drivers at all to
ssee what happens, do you know if I can install Vista to a second partition
(XP + Vista + Vista) for 3-way boot.

Yes.

Thanks, I think I'll give it a try, and I did mean 3 three partitions with 2
being Vista.

I failed in my attempt at a triple boot because the iso would not install
without loading the sata drivers, so I now know they are needed for install
and that mine are in fact good because they did work for the first install
of Vista. However after the second attempt at installing the iso without
drivers the computer hung and I had to reset which caused me to loose access
to Vista, so I was back at square one. I decided since I knew the iso
download was good and my driver disk was good that I would burn a DVD again,
not only did the disk not install it kept rebooting before it got to the
screen to enter the keycode. All my burns have been with nero 6.6 with nero
verifiing the data, so I was at loss until I decided to use a different
brand of disk, the five previous burns were Staples branded, I decided to
try Memorex.

EUREKA!!!.

With the Staples brand I was limited to burn speeds of 4X and 8X, Memorex
gave me 2X, 4X, 6X, and 8X and I of course selected 2X. The point of my
getting the DVD from Mircosoft was to avoid problems like this (maybe I'll
have better luck when they ship RC1).

It may be nothing, but...

What format were the discs that did and did not work (-R/+R/etc...)
