Chuck

I upgraded my wife computer from an intel 1.7 p4 to an intel 2.8 HT (new MSI
MB and new RAM) All hardware installed ok. Booted, Posted but wouldn't load
OS. (Win XP Home). Booted to XP CDROM and did an install/repair. Took about
an hour. Seems it re-did a complete install on me, though I pressed the "r"
button to get only a repair.

Computer booted fine. OS loaded fine. Everything looks great. One problem;
no dial up internet access. All the hardware is working. Every time I try to
set up a dial up connection I get an error message about "Error 711" and
"Cannot load Remote Access Connection manager Service". Looked THIS up on my
other computer's internet access at MS, found that I have to re-install Win
XP SP1 on that Computer and another patch as well. (lost them in the
"repair")

Had them on upgraded computer, but don't know how to access them on it now.
Can't download them to other computer and disk-move them to upgraded one
because MS will only let me download what downloading computer needs, and
that computer don't need.

Sorry to drag this out so long, but...

Thank s for any help...(

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

The repair installation sets the OS back to its original state, this is why
you lost the updates. Download the full service pack here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/sp1lang.asp

For the patch, go to the update site with the working machine, from the left
menu choose the catalog option (if you don't see it, add it using
personalize). Then select the OS and download the desired patch in a
stand-alone form that you can copy to disk and use on the other machine.

Not entirely sure what "nutcase" is on about but simply turn the service on yourself. You can set it to automatic or manual, whichever you prefer. start\control panel\administrative tools\services. Right click on it and choose properties and then click the drop down list arrow on the startup type line and choose what you want done. While you are at it click the dependencies tab and make sure the dependencies are also turned on. In my case the Telephony service must also be activated for the RACM to work. While you're at it turn on the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager. That should fix you up. Good luck

Rick is exactly on the money. This is a known issue with systems that have had a repair installation done, post SP1.

See www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, Line 87, Left column, Dial-up Modem or PPPoE is Unavailable. This REG file removes the two registry entries that cause this problem.

But as Rick said, you'll need to redo your updates as well, since the Repair Install has replaced them with original Windows file versions.
