We keep getting the following error every time we reboot
both of our DC's or restart the DNS service:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: DNS
Event Category: None
Event ID: 4006
Date: 12/25/2003
Time: 7:52:43 PM
User: N/A
Computer: DC1
Description:
The DNS server was unable to create a name in memory for
name MD2U Noble in zone Domainname.com in the Active
Directory. This directory name is ignored. Use the DNS
console to recreate the records associated with this name
or check that the Active Directory is functioning properly
and reload the zone. The event data contains the error.
Data:
0000: 7b 00 00 00 {...

We've searched everywhere and can't find the hostname MD2U
Noble. This is an old Win95 machine we had at one point
but got rid of several years ago. It's not in AD, DNS,
the registry on both DC's. We found an article on
eventid.net that pointed to permissions on the dns folder
under system32 but everything was fine there.

Has anyone else seen this or know how to get rid of this
annoying error.

Thanks,
Ed

This should help. Looks like a possible permission problem?

Yes, we saw that too but is not the case here. Any
other ideas?

can't find the hostname MD2U Noble. This is an old Win95 machine

You say this machine name is a Win95 box?
Since Win95 cannot register in DNS, then DHCP is trying to create the record
but it cannot. The reason it cannot is the space, you can't have a space in
a DNS name. I've seen this exact error before about six months ago when
helping someone set up a new domain with a bunch of Win98 boxes that the
users were allowed to change their machine names some had spaces in the
name. DHCP could not create the record due to the space. Go to the box and
remove the space from its name and the error will go away. If this machine
is no longer around check your DHCP scope, in address leases and
reservations.

.We checked DHCP also. In fact we moved/recreated DHCP
on a different server about 6 months ago, long after the
MD2U Noble host had been removed from the network.

We've searched all of AD, All of DNS, Cleared the DNS
cache numerous times, searche the registries of both DC's
and can't find anything that even starts with MD2U...Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Ed

Oops, sorry, I now realized you already said you tried eventid in your
original post.

Can you ping it? Maybe it's still in WINS?

Ok, that's the answer to one of the questions I asked.

How about WINS? Do you have WINS? Maybe it's in there?

Any Macs? Linux?

Just to ensure it's not in DNS, you can enable scavenging. You can also take
a look at the DNSLint utility to clean stuff up.

321045 - Description of the DNSLint Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321045

330105 - How to Verify Large Numbers of DNS Records by Using DNSLint:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=330105

Not sure what else to say here.
