Installed Defender Beta2 but Service won't start. Have Win2K SP-4. Keep
getting above msg when attempt to start svc. Msg does not say which file it
can't find. I put a copy of GDI+ in the Defender directory. Also running
McAffee. Any solution?

Are you on a non-English version of Windows? Not sure if that ever got
resolved, but also:

You might try these ones suggested by eddie and dkmcf:
I solve the problem in win2k changing the security properties of the
gdiplus.dll file (in system32 folder) used by windows defender to allow
the
full control by the user that make the login. ;)

It also works if you grant just the Read and Execute permissions to the
Everyone group for the gdiplus.dll file. Thanks for the tip!

Did that; still have the same problem, error 2147942402. I should have
mentioned that the pc is not on a network, so the fix recommended by Dave in
the May 9th post I assume is not relevant.

Tried the two suggestions, no luck. Then tried a reinstall - still getting
the error. At this point, I think I'll wait for Beta 3 and uninstall Beta
2. This is on a Dell Inspiron 8000. I still don't know what file it's
looking for. If its the gdiplus, it's in the System32 folder of the WINNT
folder.

I am having the exact same problem with the Windows Defender Service not
being able to start in Services.exe. "Error 2147942404: The system cannot
find the file specified. Could not start the Windows Defender Service"

Solved the Windows 2000 problem: The problem exists in the authentication of
the
Services.exe program in relation to the Windows Defender Service.

While you are stuck at the Windows Defender installer screen that is saying
that
the service cannot be started... (leave installer at retry screen)

* Open Administrative Tools->Services
* Windows Defender Service(right click)->Properties
* Log On tab
* Change from local system account to This account -> select Administrator and
type password. Click Apply. Service Fails again.
* Windows Defender Service(right click)->Properties
* Log On tab
* Change from This account back to Local System Account and click Apply then
OK.
* Windows Defender Service(right click)->Start

The Windows Defender Service "magically starts" and the installer can be
clicked to retry so it can finish installation.
