I am trying to install a new HP "all-in-one" device on my
Dell 8200 desktop system. I already have an Epson C80
printer connected. Per the HP instructions, I am trying
to install the software first before connecting the
device to the computer. However, about half-way through
the installation wizard, I get the following
message: "Error 1931-The Windows installer service cannot
update the system file C:\windows\system32\comcat.dll
because the file is protected by Windows. You may need
to update your operating system for this program to work
correctly." I also want to keep the current Epson
printer that I already have with my existing sytem. How
do I resolve this problem?

The model is an HP 6110 (I placed it in my "Subject"
heading). The HP software is v2.1.0 and the label
indicates compatability with Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP as
well as Mac OS 9, OS X. I will try the HP website to see
if there is any help there regarding troubleshooting for
this particular version. Thanks for the help.

Sorry, I missed the HP 6110 part in the subject while preparing my post.

When the 1931 error occurs, can you continue the install (e.g. by clicking
OK, Continue or Ignore)?

What version of comcat.dll is installed on your XP computer (right click on
C:\windows\system32\comcat.dll, select Properties, select the Version tab)?
For Windows XP, it should be 5.0.2600.1; 17 Aug 2001; 3,584 bytes.

Since this is a new printer have you tried to get help from the reseller or
from HP?

Usually, there is no problem having multiple printers installed, as long as
they are on different ports. Has the Epson printer stopped working since
you tried to install the HP 6110? If so, what symptom do you experience
when printing to the Epson printer (e.g. no printers in Printers and Faxes,
error message )? How is the Epson printer connected (e.g. parallel port
USB)?
