Hi all, New to the forums. Playing call of duty united offensive. Had to do a system restore after a hacktool rootkit virus struck me. Quarantined and deleted it. Upon reinstalling cod/uo, I get error 1628 most of the time. Im using windows xp home. Cod/uo hangs at about 99% and wont install. Ive done everything over and over, with drivers updating rolling back, system restore from symantec boot cd. Same problem. Quake 4 installed but wont load. Regular COD loaded and installed. Far cry installed plays fine. using nvidias 78.01 drivers. had blue screen errors nv4_disp. Rolled back to 78.01 so far so good. This is baffling to me. But Im sure there is a fix. Help me for the love of GOD!!! Somebody help me!!! Im cracking up!!!! Thanks.

Ya can quarantine the pest, but the damage done by root kits is hard to fix. Goolge about root kits and read about it and you will know what Im sayin. The new pest will kill Windows restore points so ya cant restore it and your ****ed. Ya might want to use third party backup the next time now that ya know this.

The malicous pest writers know how to mess it up and make life hard.

Ya might think about makin backups on all the files you need cause ya might need to clean install. Its almost allways easyer to fix root kit damage that way. I hate to tell someone that.

Can someone on the forum say something better.

Oh gota go.

Keep checkin your tread cause someone might know how to fix it.

Dont sweat cause your at the right forum and lots of us do clean installs and can help walk ya through..

At least your PC is still booting and ya can recover your files easy.

Download HijackThis then go to SWI Forums They know how to interpret the HJT Log.

Run Hijackthis.
- In HJT's main window, click on the Config button.
- Click the Misc. Tools button on the resulting page.
- In the StartupList section of the Misc Tools page, put a check mark in the boxes next to the "List also minor sections (full)" and "List empty sections (complete)" options.
- Click the "Generate StartupList log" button and then click "Yes" in the resulting confirmation box.
- When the scan is finished, the results will be displayed in a Windows Notepad file named "startuplist.txt".

Good luck. :thumb:
