When I try to instal microsoft antispyware, error 1606 were displayed.

Error 1606. Could not acces network location
%allusersprofile%\start menu\programs\startup\.

who can help me??

I am having the same error....When I downloaded Beta1 I had "dialup" selected
as my option, and yet I receive TWO copies of the same error when trying to
install the software, both identical:

"Error 1606. Could not access network location %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start
Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools\."

Makes me glad I've spent the last 30 minutes of my life trying to download
and install it. (Note the heavy sarcasm.)

There are no administrative users or accounts on the PC.

Certainly we can't be the only people with this problem, and I consistently
receive the error regardless of whether the PC is connected to the Internet
or not.

Any ideas on how to resolve the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to some time researching the "Error 1606" message on Microsoft's
Website I have resolved my issue, and I am writing back to provide the answer
for others.

The current article (26DEC2005) that helped me was at this URL:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315352

ERROR 1606 is related to issues resulting from an upgrade to Windows XP from
Windows 98, 98SE, or Windows ME.

I strongly urge you to read the article in the URL above that Microsoft
provides for more information; editing of the registry should not be done
without first backing up the existing registry, and the article explains in
detail HOW to do this and WHY the ERROR 1606 problem arises.

Essentially here is the issue--

Because of an upgrade to XP from ME, some registry settings were not
adequately changed, and no software could be installed without receiving the
Error1606 and failing.

The key in the registry was:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders\Common Administrative Tools

I had to find the NEW path to the Administrative tools folder, and replace
the registry key VALUES for entries where it said:

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools

to

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools

CHECK YOUR COMPUTER TO VERIFY WHAT THE CORRECT PATH TO THE ADMINISTRATIVE
TOOLS FOLDER IS BEFORE MODIFYING THE REGISTRY, DON'T JUST ASSUME YOUR
ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS FOLDER IS WHERE MINE IS--not all PC's are set-up the
same!

Also, make certain that you completely backup your registry before
performing such a procedure-- I went ahead and in that entire registry key I
replaced "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%" with the path it SHOULD have been for the
current XP install (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users)

I then rebooted the machine, the problem was resolved, and I was able to
sucessfully complete the install of MS-Antispyware Beta1.

Hope the information helps.

Thank you for the post and update akgc414. I'm sure you will have helped
someone with a similar problem... even if you never hear anymore about it here.

Good find, we appreciate your research. You should probably not use a real
address in these public newsgroups however, there are spam harvesting bots on
the loose everywhere, good it's just hotmail though <flush>... lol

Cool...I was hoping maybe I helped the original poster.

And while I give out my Hotmail address, it's not my home e-mail and carries
no identifiable information. I use it for purposes such as this. Very
likely, anybody writing me would get their messages deleted if the sender or
subject line doesn't ring a bell; I already get plenty of spam there despite
the filters, and drop in once a week or so to delete it all. (I can use my
home and work e-mail acct's via web-client if I can get to the internet.)

The link you'll need to find information regarding a "ERROR 1606" issue,
regardless of further URL changes, will be Knowledge Base article #315352.

I'm fairly certain the KB315352 number doesn't change, regardless of the
actual URL.

And thanks for watching my back, Dave M. It's covered, although I'm certain
it's not covered as well as it COULD be!!

TNX and Happy Holidaze to all.
