I hate to sound like a whiner, but . . . Why is it that
installing Microsoft's own software on a computer running
under its own operating system is always the most
difficult and frustrating?? (Well, not always. Symantec's
Norton Systemworks is even worse -- to the point that I've
abandoned that bloated product altogether.)

That's just the lead-in. Here are the details:

I'm running WinXP Home SP2 and MS Antispyware 1.0.614. I
downloaded .615 and attempted to install. Well into the
process, the following error message popped up:

"Error 1335. The cabinet file 'Data1.cab' required for
this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This
could indicate a network error, an error reading from the
CD-ROM, or a problem within this package."

I have deleted all temp files (that are not locked), all
offline content, and have run Windows Install Cleanup
utility. And I have downloaded MicrosoftSpywareInstall.exe
numerous times, each time with the same byte count. Same
error recurs no matter what I do.

Anyone got any fresh ideas?

Also, when I select 'Check for updates' from .614's File
menu, it repeatedly says it's updating definition files
from 5727 to 5735. AND it always says I am using latest
software, despite the fact that I am running .614. What's
the story here?

TIA for any insights anyone can provide.

I have the same problem on a friends machine and haven't found a solution
yet, but at least you have company!

Sorry It took so long to get back with you, but the friends PC with this
problem was 90 miles away.

It appears that it was a problem with registry entries that were left behind
after removing the 614 version. Run CCleaner and cleanup all entries
related to MS Antispyware (the GC... stuff). Also cleanout your temp
files, delete the MS Antispyware exe file (if you previously saved it),
then download again and run.

Hope it fixes yours - it fixed his.
