Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control re

The following error occurs upon installing and starting a service written in
VB6. The recommended solution is an update to .net sp1, however it isn't an
option. Does anyone have an alternative to making it work? other services are
working properly and the app wroks fine in stand alone mode.

suggestion and ideas appreciated.

..net sp1 v1.1 is installed, yet the error keeps occuring, also the app
actually starts and works properly but then its terminated
