This message is for the honorable Mr Sanderson. Mr. Sanderson, you seem to
be quite knowledgable about this anti-spyware software. I have been lurking
on the page here for about two weeks. I have noticed your posts. I wish to
work with you on my project for the dept of probation. they want me to
recommend this software for the entire department. currently I cant even
get it to load properly or run.

a brief cronology

Installed the software from the MS website

Of course I DL'd the base software and installed it according to the

directions.

After the install, it asked if I would like to run a scan. I agreed and it

started to run. After about 5000 files it totally locked up my machine. I

had to reboot to get it back.

After I did I tried to run the AntiSpyware software again and received the

following message

Error loading MS AntiSpyware

Blah blah blah encountered a a critical error (Error 101). Blah blah blah
....

I was unable to uninstall the software so I had to

reinstall the software before I uninstalled it. It finally uninstalled with

some files left over in the AntiSpyware directory I manually deleted them.

I have looked for registry entries but it is quite well incorporated into
the registry hive.

Any comments or thoughts on this problem would be really appreciated. Heck
I will buy ya a beer if I have to.

Best Regards

Gerald Bryant

Having the same problem.
Cannot stop error on install and cannot uninstall. says
registry will not uninstall. what to do?

This software first of all is not recommended for use in a product
environment, next for the Error 101 check out this solution:

a.. Open up control panel and double-click on add/remove programs.
Select Microsoft AntiSpyware
Select "Change"
On the Microsoft AntiSpyware Maintenance Wizard, click next.
On the next screen (Microsoft AntiSpyware Maintenance Wizard) select Update
Microsoft AntiSpyware and click next.
Select Install
Let the product update.
Click Finish.

Mr. Sanderson should help with the rest. ;-)

I also have the same problem and can't find solution. A
small variation is that while in local administrator
account (XP SP2 machine) I get the error, but if I log
out and log back in with Domain account (this account is
a local administrator) all seems to work perfectly.

I can see that the gcasServ.exe process is running, but
when it kicks of the gcasDTServ.exe process, I get
a "unexpected error, quitting" message and gasDTServ.exe
does not start up.

If I look in the error.log file, the last few lines read:

429::ln 15:ActiveX component can't create
object::GIANTAntiSpywareMain:modMain:Main::1/27/2005
4:23:03 PM:XP:1.0.501

try.::GIANTAntiSpywareMain:modMain:Main::1/27/2005

I have checked permissions, IE settings (Active X, et
al.), etc., but can't find a problem.

Perhaps this will help a little bit...

OK, I fixed it.

By formatting the HDD and reinstalling everything from
scratch. Works fine now.

Seriously, I could see that it had something to do with
permissions as all the DLLs wouldn't register at install
or unregister at uninstall. The DCOMCNFG reconfiguration
helped; at least the program would run when logged in as
a Domain user, though not as local administrator. But I
just don't have the time to mess with it and don't want
to mess with it for several users.

I'm still using it on about 15 PCs or more and it works
fine. For now...

Thanks.
