I am unable to update Defender. After the baloon saying that Defender is
connecting to th Internet to acquire new definitions and engine upgrades, I
get a balooon that Says "Windows Defender was unable to complete the update:
0x8024400a.

I have done a clean reinstall, and still get this message.

What do I have to do to get the updates?

Unless you are on a corporate network and need to get updates from the WSUS
server, this fix should work:
Step 1:
============
1. Click Start, click Run, type "msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}" (without quotation marks) in the Open
box, and then click OK.
2. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility from this
following link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
3. Run the utility from Start -> All Programs -> Windows Install Clean Up.
4. Select the Windows Defender Definition file entry from the list
and click Remove.
Step 2:
============
1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Please go to Microsoft Update:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ and install the updates for
Windows Defender.

I did all the above the Defender updated and worked to perfection.
This has worked for most home users.

I attempted the steps below; however, there are no updates for Windows
Defender listed on the Windows Update website.

Try the update option for Custom updates. If Defender is still installed on
your PC, that should detect the missing Definition file and prompt for a
download.

Nope; still no products found under the "beta" updates.
I've uninstalled this and gone back to Antispyware Beta1.

Hopefully there will be a permanent fix for these problems with Defender beta
2 before MSAS beta 1 expires.

Windows Defender updates are not listed under beta updates--they are
critical updates that should come through automatically with an express
scan.
