I installed Defender on my computer and receive this error message whenever
I try to update defender's definitions. I've already checked for updates on
the microsoft website. Can anyone help me out?

Can you clarify? You went to Windows Update, with Windows Defender
installed--and you were not offered definition updates for Windows Defender?

Bill,

I just installed Windows Defender sp2 on top of my former Microsoft
Anti-spyware Beta (XP sp2 on my workstation) and got the same error as this
guy. The install was fine but I open the program and it tells me that it
hasn't been updated in over 50 days so I click the "Update" button and then
it is unable to update windows defender and gives me that error. I rebooted
my workstation but that didn't seem to help at first.... however when I open
the program backup it seems to be updated now - so maybe just a reboot after
the install will fix this issue?

Thanks!
Paula

I think it is just time--the update works via AutoUpdate, and that is an
intentionally slow process--it is intended to have as little resource impact
as possible.

I am getting the same error message. Defender will not update after it is
installed. I dont have a clue what to do and so far none of these posts have
been the least bit helpfull.

Two things. First I get the same message that it has been 50 days since
update then I get an error message that it cant update. When I do the things
you suggest and follow the link it does nothing.
I also dont think that my automatic microsoft dowload is working. When I
bring it up it looks like it is frozen and not changable even though it is
clicked on the right auto update.

Definitly screwed up.

I don't know why you'd get any message from Windows Defender when you go to
Windows Update.

However, if Windows Update isn't working right, that's what you need to
troubleshoot.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818018/en-us

is the omnibus troubleshooting document--it looks pretty scary, but you can
take it a step at a time--it's very clear.

Windows Defender updates either via Windows Update, or via AutoUpdate.
Automatic updates within the program are done using AutoUpdate. If you are
on a corporate network where AutoUpdate connects to a local server, that
server needs to be running WSUS, and the administrator must have enabled the
definition updates to be published.
