I've been getting this error for several months now and have repeatedly
re-installed newer version to try and remove this fault.

It is now affecting three different installations/machines

Any idea on what the error means? DNS resolution issue maybe?

Can you describe the circumstances?

If this is an update issue, you might want to run an update that elicits the
error, then cut and paste that last tail end of %windir%\windowsupdate.log

to this thread.

I believe I have seen this one myself, but I can't recall the
circumstances--it was transient in my case.

The log is very long, but here are the last few lines

2006-07-18 12:45:15 1532 1db8 COMAPI FATAL: Unable to initiate asynchronous
installation successfully. (hr=80240016)

Is this on a managed network with a WSUS server, or are these home or small
office machines, connecting directly to AutoUpdate?

My recollection of this error was that it occurred when I manually triggered
a Windows Defender update at the same time as Microsoft Update or AutoUpdate
was pulling in updates. I believe in my case that after this error, I
re-checked the Defender home page, and the other update process had
succeeded and the app was up to date.

However--you seem to be reporting an error that is not transient and is
affecting multiple machines.

This is occurring on Both a Windows 2k3 standard server and Windows XP Pro
machines
neither are using WSUS or SUS or WUS or which ever name it decides to go by
this month :-).

It also occurs constantly and not apparent while auto update is running.
This occurs when trying to manually update.

I looked at some googled links which recommended re-registring a number of
XML related files for this error message.

I'm inclined to recommend Dial-a-fix, which makes that sort of thing pretty
easy:

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix_beta

This is a beta version, but I've found it easier to use than the current
"stable" version. Use the fixes for Windows Update, which will include the
XML stuff.

We could probably go at this from the perspective of the Windows Update
troubleshooting articles, but they are rather lengthy and complex to get
through.
