I had a client who was getting the above error when
sending and receiving email. Here was the problem:

- We moved his web and email hosting to a new host.
- The new host had the IDENTICAL POP3 address.

As a result, he could not send and receive because the
message identifiers (POPID) were not synched. We
attempted to delete the account (which deleted the
registry key); however, this did NOT repair the problem.

We had to physically make a fake account on the server
([email protected]), change the client account to the new
server account, send & receive to reset the POPIDs, then
change the account back to the new account.

I believe Microsoft should have an option to reset the
POPIDs when making changes to an account in OE or Outlook.

what mail server? it's apparently a fairly common problem with cpanel mail -
AFAIK, it's a bug in cpanel, not OL/OE. It's made worse if you use the web
interface to read your mail sometimes.

I discovered it when I researched my own problems with cpanel -

This was a bug in cppop 5.0 and 5.2 - I'm told by the cPanel folks that the
server bug is fixed in cppop 5.4. As Diane says, the problem appears to
have occurred when a user accessed their mailbox with the web interface:
cPanel would then create a "hidden" message in the mailbox which some parts
of the POP3 server would report and others would not, leading to confusion
on the part of a mail client. Essentially their server would say "I've got
a message here for you", the client would ask for the message, and the
server would reply "message, what message?".
