UPDATE: I have managed to cure the problem. My Internet favourites is
pointing to my M: drive, as "M:\Favourites". So I scanned the registry for
all entries with "M:\" and replaced them with "C:\". Then clicked on
"Update" within Windows Defender and it all updated and is now working fine.
I have also changed back all my changes I made above.

Great all working!

Thanks for posting the resolution. Why that should affect updates, I'm not
sure.

Does Defender look into the users favorites for url links to spyware sites?
But again, why would it effect the actual update process?

Since changing back my favorites tomy M: drive, everything has worked fine..
even updates! So why is it only the first time it does an update?
I'm sure other users have their favorites pointing to mapped drive of some
type?

Obviously/I hope, this will be resolved by the time the proper release?

I hope so too--I've seen perhaps two or three posts resembling yours.
They've made at least one, and perhaps several changes to the installation
process already--we'll see.

No Need to Touch the Registry

Your suggestion led me to a more simple solution. Instead of touching your registry, just click your Start button, right-click My Documents and select Properties. For me, I clicked the Restore Default button because my D drive had crashed a while back and My Documents were stored on that drive. Click OK and the installation of Windows Defender should work perfectly well without touching the registry.
