I installed WD on 12 WIN2000 computers and 2 of them had the problem of the
service failing to load. I have reinstalled and rebooted, but Windows
Defender will not load. It tells me there is a problem and suggests I
reinstall or reboot.

The error 0x800106ba. I am installing with an adminstrator account. IE is
version 6, Windows 2000 SP4 fully updated!! All Computers have the same Specs.

In the event viewer I have Event ID 7023 from Service Control Manager saying
- The Windows Defender Service service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

The file it searches for is located in the correct directory. I don't see no
problem here.

PLEASE HELP.

I have this too; I am downloading IE 6, SP1 right now. I thought that might
be the problem. But it is going to take all day to download and install
with our slow Internet here at school. T1 ain't what it used to be when you
share with 10 schools and the Board office.

I was able to remedy this, but not quite sure exactally what it was that
fixed this issue. Here are the last few things I did....

1)This particular system I was working on only had a gruesome 64mb's of RAM
I added another 128mb stick.

2) Upon trying to download the latest StartupList 2.0 I needed a Zip
program, so I downloaded Winzip.

3) The StartupList required a MSCOMCTL.OCX file which was provided here
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/missingfilesetup.exe

4) With all that said and done I uninstalled/reinstalled Windows Defender
and currently runnning a full scan. ^_^

I reinstalled the windows security updates and made sure they all inclusive
and my problem with that error is resolved.

I gave up on mine today but will try your solution regarding missing files.
It only has 65 [sic] meg of ram.

I applied the file you suggested and then let it continue loading updates
all day and this morning. Finally, reinstalled WindowsDefender and it
started, but told me the Registry size was too small so increased it from 17
Meg to 20!!! And it worked. We have about another 6 Win2000 PCs. They
will do without WindowsDefender. I am suggesting they upgrade to XP Pro.

1) Install Win2000 SP4 update
2) Install the GPI+ file
3) Download and install all updates to Win2000 from WindowsUpdate
4) Make sure that MSCOMCTL.OCX is installed
5) Install, update, and run WindowsDefender

Whew! I probably left something out. Slow antiquated PC and slow T1
Internet Connection didn't help.

It finally worked.

I followed instructions that Steve C did and everything worked.

I feel that it is quiet a lengthy procedure we comparing with MS Antispyware
installation.
