I'm writing on behalf of a neighbour of mine who's just got a new desktop pc
with Vista Home Premium on it. I'm using a laptop with Vista Home Basic on
it.

I've set up her dial-up connection and her email account for her. Everything
works fine until you want to receive email. A window pop's up asking for
'credentials'. I've put in every known combination I can think of in regards
to this and so far not one of them have worked. I've googled the problem and
called her ISP's support line and not received a solution yet.

She's using AVG Anti-Virus and I've turned off the email scanning in that
and still no luck. I use the same AV software with email scanning on and
I've not had a single problem. I've tried turning off the firewall, adding
Vista Mail to the list of approved programs.

Up until I got my laptop about a month ago, I was using XP so Vista is new
to me. My neighbour though hasn't a single clue when it comes to using a
computer let alone a whole new operating system. The last time she used a pc
with any regularity the OS was Windows 95.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this?

Thanks for your time,
Regards,
Nicole.

1. Does she have an email account somewhere?
2. She needs to enter the username and password for that account, if it
exists.

Her email account is through her ISP. We both use the same ISP.

I entered her username and password repeatedly to no avail.

That's why I'm stuck, I'm not sure what else the problem could be.

Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated.

Nicole.

Hi Nicole,

As you figured out the error 0x800CCC92 = Password not valid for
account. Double check with her email provider's webpage on how to setup
a email account in Outlook Express or Windows Mail to make sure all the
settings are correct. They both use the same settings. You may also
need to call them to verify that the username and password are the
correct ones that she is using.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,

I've setup her email account at least 3 or 4 times, checking, double and
triple checking all the settings. lol We have the same ISP so the settings
are the same for both of us. So I've checked online and with my own setup to
see if I've gotten everything in order. I've called our ISP also and had
them go through it all with me and it all seems good.

When I initially setup her internet connection she gave me a piece of paper
on which she'd written her username and password. No matter how many times I
entered the information I could'nt get it to connect. Turned out a password
that she'd written down as an example was the password that our ISP had
given her. I just tried it out on a hunch and so I did the same thing with
the email and no luck. I tried every variation I could think of. I had her
change her password so that I knew exactly what it was and still no luck.

She thinks that she might have messed with something but doesn't know what.
I don't think there is anything that she could possibly have done to make
this happen.

I really appreciate your help. If there is anything else that you can think
of that it might be...? I'm at a total loss.

Nicole.

PS. Having not posted in a newsgroup in a while I can't recall when replying
what the 'rule' is on top/bottom posting? I seem to remember that bottom was
the way to go? :/ lol

It sounds like you're not 100% certain that the email username/password
the neighbor gave you is the correct one. Does the ISP offer webmail access
(via a browser), and if so, can you log in to the neighbor's email account that
way? Can the neighbor call the ISP and get her username/password verified?

As far as top or bottom posting, that is mostly personal preference. In
non-Microsoft newsgroups most people bottom post, which is the older
convention. In the Microsoft newsgroups most people top post, which is
more like the email convention. If I'm the first responder to a post, I will
top post, otherwise I'll go with the flow. However, I hate having to scroll
through several screens of old text before I get to the new stuff.

It sounds to me like she has miswritten her password and gotten the case
wrong on one or more letters. First thing is for her to contact the ISP and
verify the password.

Hi Frank,

I checked her password, what felt like a million times and it didn't seem to
fix the problem. However, for some reason or another it's working now. She
doesn't know what she did but it's working.

I think that the password thing was probably it. I got her to change it
through our ISP to something that she'd remember, which she did but then
misspelt that too. She asked me to work out why she couldn't get online and
it turned out that what she had in head and what she had written down were
two different spellings of the same word.

Either way, it seems to be working now.

Thanks to everyone who helped out with suggestions.

Nicole.
