Error 0x80004003 Invalid Pointer

I've had problems with MS Word, so reinstalled Office XP Standard.
Still, same problem. Fearing some sort of worm, I tried to run Windows
Defender with result in subject line (i.e., Defender is now inoperative).
Related or not?
In any event, how do I restore Windows Defender?
 
Thanks, Tom. Things are much better now that >600 medium-risk cookies were
removed. I wonder why Windows Defender (when it was working) didn't regard
those as potential problems?
 
There's a problem with Word which may be caused by one of the recent
Microsoft Security patches.

If the work required to follow the resolution steps seems daunting to you, I
can probably provide a canned solution--but I need to know which version of
Windows is involved.
