Have you tried going to Windows Update and checking for available updates?

In general, if that KB (KB 915105) procedure fails with an error message,
the next thing to try is the Windows Installer cleanup tool:

This is a well documented issue which has been posted across, in particular,
the Announcement and General Discussion newsgroups. There has also been some
input from the MSFT guys regarding the issue. Using the search function type:
`Invalid Pointer` and you will see what I mean.
I'd recommend re-downloading, and saving to a known location--like the
desktop.
After the download is complete, disable real-time protection by your
antivirus for long enough to do the installation.
