Erroneous processor reporting in XP

Having recently built a computer for a friend and
installed Windows XP SP1 everything works fine except
that it reports that there are two 2.4Ghz intel P4
(Northwood core) processors instead of the installed one.
The rest of the set up is:

Seagate SATA 120Gb hard drive
Asus P4P800 VM Socket 478 Motherboard
Nvidia Geforce FX 5600 256mb Ram
Corsair PC2700 DDR 512MB Ram
DVD and CdRW drives as well

The problem is that sometimes the machine crawls to a
halt and the processor usage goes up to 100% until a
reeboot is performed. I have installed all the latest
chipset and graphics drivers to try and remedy the
problem. Also installed all recommended and a few other
windows update components to no avail.

Any help on the matter would be much appreciated.

If that P4 supports hyperthreading (and I'm pretty sure
it does), XP will show both logical CPUs, so that part is
normal.

If you open Task Manager and click on the Processes tab
when you get the slow condition, what process is taking
up all the CPU time?

The process is explorer that takes up all the CPU time.
Checked for any viruses, even reformatted a couple of
times and still no joy.
