I'm running W2KSvr on a file server. Most PCs are
running XP Pro with a few 98se. All have Office 2002.
When attempting to open Excel spreadsheets, several users
are commonly getting a dialog box "File in Use" stating
that the desired file is locked for editing by someone
(often themselves) when in fact the files are not open by
them or anyone else.
When I look at Open Files in the Computer Management
console on the server, the files may or may not be shown
as being open. If shown as being open, I close them - it
still doesn't make any difference. I can copy the file
to a different filename and give them R/W access that
way. Rebooting the server solves the problem
temporarily, but there is a good deal of resistance to me
rebooting the server several times a day during working
hours.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Bill,

You are likely experiencing issues described in Q814112.

Start by reading that article and determining which information in there
applies to you. If problems are still not resolved, you might find it
worthwhile to call Microsoft support. Even if you have to pay for support
(and no, I don't know the full rules for determining entitlement), the costs
for a support incident might be significantly less than the downtime this is
causing you.
