I have notice that over the past month my mouse moves
erratically around the screen, but not all the time. I
have reinstalled windows and tried both a ps/2 intellimouse
(oldskool with a ball) and a new usb optical mouse. I have
done a full virus scan also. Is there any know hardware
problems which can cause this problem??

A mouse needs to be cleaned. The dirt, dust, lint and
grease on the mouse pad is picked up by the ball and
deposited on the rollers inside the mouse. The rollers then
are lumpy and don't roll smoothly.

To clean, with the computer off, turn the mouse over,
release the mouse ball retainer (some turn and some slide)
and remove the ball. The ball needs to be cleaned and you
need to look inside for deposits on the two rollers. I use
wooden tooth picks and cotton swabs with alcohol to
carefully clean inside (just a damp swab). Then put it back
together.

Optical mice don't have moving parts, but the bottom needs
to be fairly clean.

Trackballs need to be popped out and lint/dirt removed same
as a mechanical mouse.
