Help! My computer is doing erratic behaviors like:
1. Scrolling up and down the window
2. closing all or some of the open browsers
3. clicking on the menus
4. opening other programs
5. clicking the start menu
6. the cursor moves around the screen

It’s like somebody else is controlling it. I tried running an anti-virus
program (Kaspersky, AVG) but nothing was found to be infecting my computer.

Last year when our files were missing and we found nothing on the virus
scan, we just reformatted our hard drive. And now, we’re having systems
slowdown again. What’s the best anti-virus you could recommend? Please help!

Are you using a wireless mouse?

Locate, download, install and update with the latest detection
definitions for:

AD Aware Personal
Spybot: Search and Destroy
Spyware Terminator

Besides checking for viruses, you need to detect any possible
malware / spyware / hackware / adware infestations. These categories
do not normally get detected by anti-virus softwares.

When the cursor moves around the screen, is the LED
on the network interface blinking as well ? In other
words, is there network activity that correlates
with all the strange behaviors ? If so, then someone
could be using "back orifice' or an equivalent piece of
malware.

No, I am not using a wireless mouse.
The cursor moves around the screen when I'm connected on the internet and
still moves around when I'm not connected. My computer is not connected on a
LAN.

I've already run Trend Micro Sysclean and virus pattern file, then AVG
anti-virus but still the problem persists.

By the way, whenever I download Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-aware,
Malwarebytes, an error always occurs with a message: The file is corrupted or
cannot read the source file. Why is this?

Is the mouse PS-2 or USB? If it's PS-2 try a different mouse. If it's USB
disconnect all other USB devices.

To verify a hardware problem, I like to boot from a Linux LiveCD, such
as Knoppix (knopper.net) or Ubuntu (ubuntu.com). I was able to verify I
had a video card problem that way. (If two OSes, when booted, display
the same kind of symptoms, then it could be a hardware problem.) The
Linux file is a 700MB download, and you need a CD burner package that
knows what to do with ISO9660 files (Nero etc).

It is also possible to scan a computer while in Linux, but I never found
anything with this package.

If the other tools you named won't execute, then it is always possible that a
malware package could be preventing them from running.

If you look at some of the antivirus postings in

microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

they'll tell you about websites you can visit, to get more
help with running the various tools like Malwarebytes. This is
copied from one of those postings.

Do you download these from their "respected" web site? If yes, then
you might have some type of "malware" that is running and detecting
"known" removal tools. Some "malwares" proposely "destroy" the
removal tools in order to protect themselves.
