I do not have permission to change drivers add software or auto update. I
didn't change any of the passwords.
I am not using this machine on a network and I am the only user. I am
listed only as a power user. I have tried to change my staus to admin with
no luck.

You can't grant yourself more permissions than you currently have. Log in
with the built-in administrator account and either install the things you
need that way, or grant your own account admin rights by adding it to the
administrators group.
