"Eraser shavings" in my plotter

I have an HP DesignJet 800PS 42" model. Lately we've been finding what
look like black eraser shavings or ground rubber on the paper and
platten. I'm guessing that maybe the belt is disintegrating, although I
can't see any obviously worn areas on it. Today the plotter started
making noises while plotting. Then there were shavings all over the
paper, and it finally gave up with a 86:01 error. After running some
diagnostics, which didn't report any problems, the plotter started
working fine again.

Does this sound like my belt is old?

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions,

Larry

Yep. We have an old 450C. It chewed its belt into ribbons a while
ago. The symptoms were inconclusive until I noticed the black eraser
shavings. That's a dead giveaway.

For our machine, the new belt cost less than $30 and it took two of
us a couple of hours to replace it. The one part we broke doesn't
seem to be essential :) This job was possible only because we
dowloaded the necessary chapter from the serivice manual. Otherwise
it would have been hard to figure out what to remove and in what
order.
