Has anyone had problems or experience with teh Epson CX5200:

ink drying in cartridges or printhead
cleaning the printhead(s)
refilling cartridges with aftermarket "archive" ink

Do you have any operating tips?

keep the printer covered (to prevent drying); put a water supply under
the cover
turn it off at night (it runs a built-in head cleaning routine at
startup)

- thanks, Bill

I'm running a CX5200 and to date, have had no problems with it. I was
warned by friends that if I did not use the printer regularly that ink would
dry on the printheads. I mentioned this to a clerk in one of the major
computer stores and he said that he had one and cleaned the heads with a
moist cloth using either clean water or alcohol. Epson, of course, frowns
seriously on this, and I have not tried it so don't know how well it works.

You are aware I assume that most folks will tell you that these cartridges
are not refillable. This is not true, however most refill kits do no
accommodate them. One of the major drawbacks is that there is a chip in the
side of the cartridge that must be reset when refilled. Chip setters are
available (+,-$29) along with reasonable cost ink and detailed instructions
at some locations, including:

Disregarding the drying problem, I have found that compatible cartridges are
available at a price that makes me question refilling. Check out the
following site:

http://www.inkjetcartridge.com/inkjetcartridge/epstylc82inc1.html

Discounts are available from the prices quoted - Type "Discount" where it
calls for coupon code on the order form, and that will bring the tab to less
than $40 for the 4 cartridge package.

I am planning to leave my printer unused for a couple of months starting
next week, so this should be the test for the ink drying and head cleaning
bit.

Good luck

Since the printheads are not built into the cartridge. . . this clerk
must be a mechanical genius at printer/scanner disassembly!

When powered-off by the unit switch-the heads are parked-and drying
should not be a problem.
