Epsonphoto 950 cart replacement problem

I have an Epson 950 which has developed a problem, probably as I now
learn from other posts in this group from infrequent use. What I am
unsure of however is whether this is a clogged print head or something
entirely different. So that I do not omit a detail which may be
important I'll describe what happened.
After 2 months inactivity I replaced magenta and Cyan with Jettec
carts, both these carts now show full in status monitor and went to
print. The second black cart which moments before had been showing as
1/3 full is "Out of Ink". I replace with a new Jettec black cart and
print. After about 10 seconds of printing the same Black cart is "Out
of Ink". Bad cart I thought so I run the replace ink cart from status
monitor with another new black cart and get a dialogue box "This cart
is empty, replace or finish"

To check it's not a duff batch I swap the rejected ink cart into the
first black slot and that registers full (as it should be). Seems
therefore the second black slot will not accept any new cartridge as
always appears to be empty. Is this what happens with a clogged
nozzle? Just to exclude a driver problem I installed the latest driver
on a new partition but get exactly the same results. Can anyone please
point me in the right direction.

I've seen this happen a few times and it is probably the small and quite
brittle hardened contact pins which contact the cartridge chip at the back.
Try cleaning them and the chip with a cotton bud and alcohol as necessary:
small splashes of ink collect there on cartridge changes. This would explain
the differences when you swap cartridges.
Clogged nozzles will only appear as missing and sporadic lines on the paper.

The same point did occur to me when I got home last night so I cleaned
the points with electrical contact spray but still same results. I
dont know whether this was because the chips had reset to empty as I
have no new black carts handy to try again. Incidently these were
Jettec so I gather there may be a chip resetter and I'm sure (although
I cannot find it now) these will work on the photo 950. If you could
show me the link I'll get one straight away.

One last point, is it usual for a bad contact to have that effect on a
Jettec chip, I would have thought it more logical for the printer
simply not to recognize the cartridge altogether. Then again i'm no
electronics expert.

Usually it does reject the cartridge and you go on that Epson
merry-go-round - however when the contacts are wet it produces thos odd
cartridge empty messages. If you are sure there is ink in the cartridge I
have a few spare chips and can either include one with the reset device or
let me know.

Hi Tony

As far as the resetter is it the one listed at 5.82? I saw this before
but was unsure whether it was the right one because I remember seeing
a flash demo of the resetter which included an adaptor to line up
chips on the thin moulded cartridges such as I have with the photo
950.

I'm still not certain resetting the carts I have is going to solve my
problem as today I got a hold of some new black Jettec and having
cleaned the contacts thoroughly with both contact cleaner and alchohol
I am still getting this weird cyclical problem of first having the
status monitor recognizing a full black cart and then when I go to
print status monitor pops up saying the cart is empty. I just do not
understand it? Does this in anyway sound familiar to anything you have
seen or heard of before?
